The Renaissance Era is a time that holds a lot of fascination. Also, a good renaissance costume is also something that makes for a great addition to a costume party or Halloween party. With Halloween getting close why not think about all the possibilities for truly unique Halloween costume.
It is important to keep in mind while choosing a renaissance costume there are different types of costumes depending on what you want to do. The wealthy dressed far differently than the poor and every day dress differed from special occasion dress. If you want to dress as a king from the Medieval Era, your costume will be much different than if you dressed as a peasant.
In the middle ages a person's style of clothing depended on that person's role in society. The people of that era could not just wear anything they wanted. They were put into classes and each class had its own unique style of clothing. The kings and queens could afford the most expensive types of clothing so there outfits were by far the most extravagant and over the top.
They used silk and damask fabrics dyed in extremely vibrant colors to make up there wardrobe. Men of nobility wore house jackets. The longer jackets marked wealth. The queens and women of this class wore long vibrant flowing gowns. The women often wore fancy headpieces as well. The cloths that noble men and women wore were tailored, and only people of very high rank wore jewelry. A ring brooch was the most common type jewelry wore in that time period. In the fourteenth century, diamonds became very popular; but by the mid fourteenth century, laws were created that determined who could wear what kind of jewelry. Peasants had little to know money, so there styles differed greatly. They wore any clothing they could find or make. The clothes themselves were rough and shapeless. They were mostly dull gray and brown colors. The main role for their clothing was to keep them warm and dry, which meant that they were usually made out of wool that they had spun themselves.
There are certain accessories that must be attended to whenever you are trying to decide on that perfect renaissance costume. Here are some things to consider including.
Hats - Men's Renaissance costumes aren't complete without the proper headgear. An ostrich plume exudes flair, while a fold-up leather hat lends authenticity for rangers, vagabonds, and foresters. A Russian sheepskin hat will keep you warm in the coldest of climes, while a cavalier hat is a basic necessity for peasants and royalty. Both men and women appreciate Elizabethan caps, and a snood or a cap is a must have for women.
Swords and Weapons - Medieval swords are but one type of weapon carried by SCA members and those who participate in reenactments. There are also daggers, knives, maces, and rapiers, as well as scabbards and small collector weapons.
Armor - Medieval or sport combat requires the right armor. Whether you need a 12-, 14-, or 16-gauge helmet, or tabards, and armor bags, you can find equipment that looks good and fits properly.
Boots and Shoes - From pirate boots to formal 15th century shoes, you should be able to find a wide range of sturdy footwear to complement your outfit. You will also need the right socks and tights appropriate for the era.
